The Federal Skilled Worker (FSW) program is one of the most popular programs through which people who are outside of Canada can directly apply to immigrate and settle in Canada. The FSW program uses a point system (minimum of 67 points out of 100) based on various selection factors to determine the applicant’s ability to become economically established in Canada.

To be considered for Federal Skilled Worker program candidates must meet minimum requirements such as

  • Canadian secondary or post-secondary degree or an equivalent Foreign Credential Assessment (ECA) report from an approved agency in case of a foreign-educated candidate.
  • Minimum language requirements of Canadian Level Benchmark (CLB)7 in English, French, or both.
  • Minimum 1-year experience (1,560 hours total / 30 hours per week), continuous full-time or an equal amount in part-time in the last 10 years in one of the following skilled trade categories:
  • Managerial jobs (NOC skill type 0)
  • Professional jobs (NOC skill level A)
  • Technical jobs and skilled trades (NOC skill level B)
  • Settlement funds to prove financial support for the applicant and accompanying family members.

Federal Skilled Trades Program is part of a major effort by the Canadian government to welcome specific skilled trades workers to Canada to address certain labor shortages. This program provides an excellent opportunity for skilled workers outside of Canada to immigrate and establish themselves in the Canadian economy.

To be considered for Federal Skilled Trades program, candidates must meet minimum requirements such as

  • Have a valid job offer (approved LMIA) of full-time employment for at least one year from a Canadian employer or
  • Certificate of qualification in primary NOC trade from a provincial or territorial body. This certificate is obtained when applicants prove they have passed a certification exam or met all the requirements to practice their trade in a specific province or territory
  • Minimum language requirements of Canadian Level Benchmark (CLB) 5 in speaking and listening and CLB 4 in reading and writing in English, French, or both.
  • Plan to live and work outside of Quebec.
  • Minimum 2 years of full-time (or equivalent part-time) work experience in one of the following skilled trade categories under NOC B in the last 5 years.
  • Major Group 72: industrial, electrical, and construction trades,
  • Major Group 73: maintenance and equipment operation trades,
  • Major Group 82: supervisors and technical jobs in natural resources, agriculture, and related production,
  • Major Group 92: processing, manufacturing, and utilities supervisors and central control operators,
  • Minor Group 632: chefs and cooks, and
  • Minor Group 633: butchers and bakers.

The Canadian Experience Class (CEC) category is an immigration pathway for people who are already in Canada either as a temporary worker or a graduated international student with Canadian work experience. This program is only applicable for people who are planning to live anywhere in Canada except Quebec. Quebec has its own version of this program called the Quebec Experience Class.

To be considered for Federal Skilled Trades program, candidates must meet minimum requirements such as

  • Have at least 12 months of skilled work experience in Canada, in the last three years (before you apply). The work was: full-time OR an equal amount in part-time in one of the skilled trade categories
  • Managerial jobs (skill level 0)
  • Professional jobs (skill type A)
  • Technical jobs (skill type B)
  • The work experience in Canada should have been gained with the proper authorization
  • Minimum language requirements of Canadian Level Benchmark CLB 7 in case of NOC O, A category and CLB 5 in case of NOC B.
