If you are a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, you may be eligible to sponsor certain family members to settle in Canada for the long-term as permanent residents.

To sponsor a family member, you are required to meet several requirements such as being
- A Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada
- 18 years of age or older able to support the sponsored person and their dependents for several years
- A law-abiding citizen with no criminal record and not be a risk to security of Canada
Canada’s child sponsorship program allows Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor their biological or adopted children under the age of 22 for permanent residence, as long as they are unmarried and have no children of their own. A child over the age of 22 may be considered dependent if they suffer from a physical or mental condition that prevents them from being able to support themselves.
If you wish to sponsor a dependent child, then you must
- Be a Canadian Citizen or a Permanent Resident of Canada.
- Be willing to sign an agreement with the government that they are willing to undertake the Sponsorship for 10 years or until the dependent child becomes 22 years old.
- If the child is 19 years old or older at the time of PR, then the sponsor is only responsible for a period of 3 years after entering the country.
- Meet the minimum financial obligations required by the government of Canada.
You may be eligible to sponsor your spouse, common-law, or conjugal partner for Canadian permanent residence, whether they are living in Canada with a valid temporary visa or residing abroad. If you are looking to apply for spousal sponsorship inside Canada, the application is being processed first, and once approved, the applicant’s status will change from temporary to permanent. Spousal sponsorship within Canada gives an opportunity to a person being sponsored and living in Canada to apply for an Open-Work Permit.
If you wish to sponsor a Spouse / Partner, then you must
- Be a Canadian Citizen or a Permanent Resident of Canada and at least 18 years of age.
- Be willing to sign an agreement with the government that as a sponsor they are financially responsible for the sponsored and any dependents for a period of 3 years after entering as a PRand upwards of 10 years for the dependents.
- Be able to show a legal marriage in either Canada or under the laws of the jurisdiction that it was carried out in.
- In the case of a Conjugal or Common-Law Partner, the evidence must be shown of a dependent relationship for a minimum of 1 year.
The Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) is a unique Immigration program allowing both Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor their own parents and grandparents for Canadian permanent residence.
To sponsor a parent or grandparent, citizens and permanent residents will be required to demonstrate that they can financially support their family by meeting the Minimum Necessary Income (MNI) for the size of their family unit. They must also agree to financially support their sponsored family members if needed. Sponsors who are unable to permanently support their parent or grandparent may be eligible for a Super Visa, a long-term, multiple-entry visa for parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens and permanent residents.
If you wish to sponsor a parent or a grandparent, then you must
- Be a Canadian Citizen or a Permanent Resident of Canada.
- Be willing to sign an agreement with the government that they are willing to undertake the Sponsorship for 20 years and be responsible for all their financial needs.
- Meet the minimum financial obligations required by the government of Canada.
